Baptism and Personal Testimony
The Significance of Baptism
Baptism holds special significance during the Easter season, as it powerfully illustrates the central message of the resurrection. (Good Questions | Easter | Week 3, 2:51) Throughout church history, Easter has been a traditional time for baptism because the act itself pictures the gospel and particularly the resurrection of Jesus.
As explained during the Easter service, baptism signifies our union with Christ - that we are "all in with him." Just as Jesus died, was buried, and rose from the dead, believers identify with him through baptism in obedience to his command. (Good Questions | Easter | Week 3, 3:12) The symbolism is profound: our old life is gone, we've been raised to a new life, and our sins have been washed away.
Personal Testimonies of Faith
Children's Testimonies
The Easter service featured several powerful testimonies from young believers who chose to follow Christ in baptism:
Hudson Brma (Age 9) shared that he learned about Jesus from his parents and church. He came forward to admit that he is a sinner who needs Jesus, believing that Jesus died on the cross for his sins and that he would live his life telling others about Jesus. (Good Questions | Easter | Week 3, 4:25)
Shepherd Pagee (Age 10) testified that he had been learning about Jesus for a long time and came to admit that he has "fallen short of the glory of God" and that Jesus is the Son of God who died for his sins. He expressed that this impacts his life because he is showing everyone that he follows Jesus, and he wants to worship God for the rest of his life. (Good Questions | Easter | Week 3, 5:44)
Elliott Van Buerk (Age 9) accepted Jesus as his savior one summer at Vacation Bible School. He acknowledged that he's a sinner who does things that don't please God and that this brings him away from God. However, because Jesus loves him and died on the cross for his sins and was raised from the dead, he can be saved. He knows that God is in charge of his life and that the Holy Spirit helps him. (Good Questions | Easter | Week 3, 7:14)
Hudson Van Buerk (Age 7) had believed in Jesus as his Savior for quite a while, but a few weeks prior to his baptism, he sat down with his parents and prayed to ask Jesus to be Lord of his life. He honestly shared, "I sin. I have sin in my heart so I'm tempted to sin." He affirmed his belief that Jesus, God's son, died on the cross for those sins and rose again, and committed to pray to God when he needs help and read his Bible more. (Good Questions | Easter | Week 3, 8:22)
Rebecca Quinn (Age 11) learned about Jesus from her parents, church, and reading her Bible. She came to admit that she is not perfect and therefore needs Jesus. She believes that Jesus is the Son of God who died on the cross for her sins, came back from the dead, and left us with the Holy Spirit. She committed to praise God for the rest of her life and have eternal life with God. (Good Questions | Easter | Week 3, 9:41)
Adult Testimony
Jared Melrath's story represents a journey from childhood faith to personal encounter. Growing up in a Methodist church with a family that loved the Lord, he drifted from faith during junior high and high school. He professed to know Jesus but didn't feel he had encountered Jesus personally or known him experientially. (Good Questions | Easter | Week 3, 10:44)
During college, Jared began living for himself and was consumed with worry about what people thought of him - the fear of man. Through involvement with Young Life, some men began taking him through God's word and discipling him. At a retreat weekend, after weeks of studying God's word, he finally got alone with God by himself and encountered God personally, giving his life to Jesus. He had been ready to follow the Lord in baptism for months before his Easter baptism. (Good Questions | Easter | Week 3, 11:32)
The Meaning Behind the Waters
During each baptism, candidates were asked if they believe that Jesus is the Son of God who died on the cross for their sins, was buried, and rose again on the third day. Upon their affirmation, they were baptized "in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, buried with Christ in baptism and raised to walk in a new way of life." (Good Questions | Easter | Week 3, 5:10)
The congregation was reminded that everything the waters say to those being baptized, God says to all who know Christ: your sins are forgiven, your old life is gone, you've been given a new life, and one day when you die, God will raise you up as well. (Good Questions | Easter | Week 3, 3:55)
These testimonies demonstrate that faith transformation comes at different stages of life and through various circumstances - from childhood decisions at Vacation Bible School to adult encounters during college retreats. Each story reflects the biblical truth that we all must personally acknowledge our need for Jesus and accept him as Lord and Savior, as referenced in Romans 3:23 and Romans 6:4.
